Bar Association Offers Bursary Grant to Law Students

The TCI Bar Council announced the details of the annual TCI Bar Association Bursary Grant and invites suitably qualified applicants to apply.

The Bursary Grant is a monetary award offered to students who are Turks and Caicos Islanders and are enrolled in full-time legal education at tertiary level. The programme of study must lead to a qualifying law degree permitting the student to further enroll onto a vocational law program geared towards the practice of law in accordance with section 5(1)(a) of the Legal Profession Ordinance and who must demonstrate an intention to return to the Turks and Caicos Islands to further pursue their legal career.

The Bursary Grant can either be applied to a student’s tuition or accommodation costs and is paid directly to the student’s university (or course provider) or their housing agent (or landlord).

The precise amount of each Bursary Grant will be determined during the consideration of an application, however US$2,500 is the maximum award any one applicant can obtain for any one application.

Of the Bursary Grant, the President of the TCI Bar Council Selvyn Hawkins says “The Bursary Grant confirms the commitment of the Bar Council to encourage the increase in representation and participation of Turks and Caicos Islanders as attorneys within the Turks and Caicos Islands. The Council has noted an increased interest in the Bursary Grant by Islander students and hopes to enlarge the capacity of the Council in the future to offer greater support and/or opportunities aimed as assisting in the training and development of our aspiring attorneys.”

The application deadline is August 15, 2022, and further information on the application process, requirements and forms can be obtained from the Bar Council’s website at https://tciba.tc.
