Selvyn Hawkins, attorney with Misick and Stanbrook, is the new president of the Turks and Caicos Islands Bar Council. Hawkins and several others were elected to the council on Saturday, April 10, during its annual general meeting, which was this year held virtually. The other appointees are Sarah Knight as vice-president, and Kerchelle Bain, Tremmaine Swann and Desiree Downes as members. Downes is a Crown officer appointed to the council by Attorney General Rhondalee Braithwaite-Knowles. Each member is appointed for a period of one year, subject to re-election. Explorer to attempt 1st human-powered crossing of Turks and Caicos Islands
Toronto-based explorer Mario Rigby spent two years crossing the African continent on foot. Last summer, he paddled the length of Lake Ontario in 20 days. Now, the Canadian-Turks and Caicos Islander is returning home to paddle, run, hike, cycle and swim across the eight main islands that make up the Turks and Caicos archipelago. According to Visa service provider Official-esta.com, Turks and Caicos suffered the highest percentage of GDP lost due to the financial impact of Covid-19 on world tourism. The country has lost USD$94 million in revenue representing 9.2% of GDP, and is among five other Caribbean nations occupying the top 10 list. On the first day flights resumption in Turks and Caicos Islands, two American Airlines flights and 18 private jets were welcomed into the country. The Turks and Caicos Islands went under a 24-hour curfew on 28th March 2020 and is now beginning a phased re-opening of certain businesses. A full re-opening of the local economy will begin on 6th July 2020 including a gradual reintroduction of domestic travel. JUSTICE Mabel Agyemang, a Ghanian judge of the highest calibre, officially took up her post as Chief Justice of the Turks and Caicos Islands on April 1. Joining her on the judicial bench this past Wednesday was former Chief Magistrate Tanya Lobban-Jackson. Lobban-Jackson, a native of Jamaica, now serves as a judge of the Supreme Court.
