Her Excellency Governor Dileeni Daniel-Selvaratnam has appointed Yonette Cummings-Edwards as the new Chief Justice of the Turks and Caicos Islands, marking the third time a woman has held the nation’s highest judicial office. With more than 37 years of experience, including senior leadership roles in Guyana’s judiciary, she will officially assume the position on May 1, 2026, succeeding Mabel Agyemang. His Excellency Governor Nigel Dakin has accepted the Judicial Service Commission’s (JSC) recommendation to extend Her Ladyship, Chief Justice Mabel Agyemang’s contract until March 2026. Given the Chief Justice’s zeal and efforts to improve the Turks and Caicos Islands’ judicial system, the Governor expressed his delight at accepting the JSC’s recommendation. New Chief Justice Takes The Bench in Turks and Caicos
JUSTICE Mabel Agyemang, a Ghanian judge of the highest calibre, officially took up her post as Chief Justice of the Turks and Caicos Islands on April 1. Joining her on the judicial bench this past Wednesday was former Chief Magistrate Tanya Lobban-Jackson. Lobban-Jackson, a native of Jamaica, now serves as a judge of the Supreme Court.
